I make use of some sort of idea which comes into my mind. Whether this idea has any artistic value I do not know.  I try very hard just to have the idea.

                                                                        Ralphael Sanzio, 1514

Creating art is a humble and astounding quest. Since my first studio, I have worked in series.  This approach allows me to navigate a cluster of challenges which are specific to each series.

Each series has its own set of ideative concepts, choice of medium and a palette of color (or lack of) range.  The series are not thought of as a narrative but as an anthology of single works.  I am not consciously aware of why a series ends.  But, always a new one begins right away.  This exhibit presents art from my last three series and the one I am currently engaged in.

Although the time period of the exhibition is a span of 25 years, that is a coincidence.  1985 is the year my wife, Dell Jones, and I moved from our lower Manhattan loft to the rolling hills of the Hudson Highlands, where my studio is a former horse stable.

The drama of the new landscape is responsible for the Piano Mountain Series.  Traveling the Italian auto route to Florence revealed the spatial, dynamic dimension of the Tunnel Series.  The sublime WWII memorials in the south of France, where we have lived part of each year for twenty years, were the source of the Resistance Series.  The current series, The Moons of Jupiter, is a wholly imagined set of dreamed landscapes.

What Baudelaire said of music is what I would say of art: “La musique souvent me prend comme une mer! / Vers ma pale etoile...” (Music sweeps me like the sea! / Toward my pale star...).
